Introduction
This workshop is dedicated to inspire each participant to find their own voice, either in life or as a performer. There are no limits to express yourself. No rules for a unique beautiful and human expression of oneself.

The workshop would hence focus on conducting exercises which may help individuals de mask oneself from their current role set and focus internally on the emotional, social and at times spiritual effects of movement and theatre.

Part 1 - Who am I:
With a selection of different exercises we explore the theme with our minds, bodies and voices. We try to create a free flow of inspirations and ideas, to collect material, which will help us to find our own unique expressions as performers and individuals.

Part 2 - The others and me:
Inspired by other cultures through images, music and texts we are exploring our individual connection to the world and people around us.

Part 3 – Finding a Voice:
This is the part of the session where we will create the performances with the material we have collected and put into practice what we have learned throughout the workshop.

Workshop Overview
During the session we will explore elements of a wide variety practices through movement explorations, dance and theatre making, readings, discussions, videos, written responses, collaborative projects. By examining movement in both global and local contexts we will move towards a fuller appreciation and understanding of the influence of movemnent and theatre in our everyday lives as well as an embodied reflection and expression of the city in which we live.

Objectives

  • Describe the functions of movement / theatre and the relationship between performance and the greater artistic, social, cultural and political landscape in which it was created and currently exists.
  • Creating an open and secure space meant to encourage collaboration and support of other artists and human beings.
  • Finding the connection to another person and the world where we find inspiration and artistic expression.

Session Outline

• Participate in movement & theatre exercises to gain a greater appreciation for and understanding of the physical, creative and per formative processes involved in the art form.

• Working with texts, music, movement, work individually as well as in little groups of 2-3 people. Each part of the session is followed by a discussion of the group where we share our experiences.

• At the end of the workshop each participant will perform their 5 - 10 minute piece and will talk about the symbol they found, which will ultimately guide us into a discussion about what our creative expression means to us.

The Balancing Act

In today’s world young people see violence almost everywhere. It starts with their journey to school. Even crossing a road has become a stressful activity. And then they have to deal with the studies and most of the times unfriendly pedagogies. They also have to take the stress of peer pressure. After the school hours, they are either in the tuition classes or homework. With the pressures of ‘development’ and ‘modern life’, they live in a nuclear family. Most of the times, both the parents are working professionals and they don’t have sufficient time for their children. Children get glued to the television and even cartoons show violence as fun!

What would be the life of a young person who is going through or gone through such a violent atmosphere? What kind of imagination and ideas such mind would evolve? What could be the repercussions of such bringing up? Can we at least look at the emotional needs and life of such young people? Can we equip young people to deal with such scenario?

The play tries to respond to some these questions.

About the workshop
Movement has always been an inherent part of our existence. As children, we move to explore the environment. However as we grow, our movements are primarily functional and related to a task at hand. We also develop perceptions about our individual bodies and restrict non-verbal forms of expression. During the session we will explore elements of a wide variety practices through movement explorations, dance making, readings, discussions, videos, written responses, collaborative projects.

The workshop would hence focus on conducting movement exercises which may help individuals de-mask oneself from their current role set and focus internally on the emotional, social and at times spiritual effects of movement. Deployed in a progressive fashion, the exercises eventually create a non- threatening space for individuals to express, share and de-stress at different levels. The exercises would be conducted for individuals, in pairs, in triads or as a group.

A soldier is lost in a battle! What does it mean? What happens to him and his family? Is it ever known if the lost soldier is dead or alive? If yes, when? Can the ‘lost’ one ever be ‘found’? Or is he never lost?

What suffering does the family of a lost hero goes through? Wait and hope are the only companions to them? What does it take to wait for so long? Courage to fight a battle and courage to wait till eternity…are they one and the same?

And what do you do with the memories of the dear ones?

What do we fight for? People are killed for the same? The win and loss in the battle- what does it mean to a combatant? Can we live peacefully just by calling them martyrs? We can? How?

Questions such as these troubled me while directing DNA. More questions emerged in the process. The life on the edge of living and dead generates more and more questions. There are no clear answers to them.

Calling a lost soldier a hero is always easy. But what about those who are left behind? The play is about the same concern.

Georgos Neophytu, a Cyprus based playwright, has written this play. I got to know about it through my senior friend in Turkey. The play is based on history of Cyprus. However, the content is so universal that it can be performed almost in any corner of the world. Contemporary and Universal. The universality in this regard is rather painful. But it’s the truth.

We do not perform this play on a regular stage. We are performing it in rather informal spaces, especially in the drawing rooms of houses. I would restrain myself from speaking about the play more. Please watch it. I’ll be there to talk to you after the show!

The Balancing Act

 About The Balancing Act

Director’s Note

My question to myself has always been “Why do I do theatre?” And if it is for young audiences, what becomes “special” in my creative work?

Children's creative urge has been nourished through different cultural activities to a large extent. As parts of festivities, they have access to different craft materials, come to handle forms and get to know the ideas by and by. Children's fresh outlook, a sense of natural justice and a capacity for innovative improvisations provide a means of learning the rational as well as emotive elements of culture, which are significant. In India, children's activities are regarded as incidental, but nobody grudges their joy while engaging in seemingly silly activities. If we use them as the handle for the new process, the fantasy may hold an invitation to grow and develop. It could be woven into their daily life rather than making it an optional Holiday Play pen.

Children's plays whether acted by adults or children have also become a summer activity. Other art forms remain a hobby, which may not be taken seriously! It becomes more like a pastime activity rather than a cultural activity. Urban children are slotted for 'culture' in the vacations. The rest of the year is reserved exclusively for studies. Artistic expressions need to be a device available to the child, for the problems of making sense that the child may face. It is very often observed that instead of technical and creative processes of art, children get exposed to ‘products’ like spectacle, magical effects and artificial manners of gesture and delivery.

It is important therefore to take the arts to the children with greater seriousness and without the pressures of commercialism throughout the year.

With this feeling, we perform The Balancing Act!

- Vidyanidhee Vanarase (Prasad)

The Titus Project

About the Titus Project

Titus Andronicus is a lesser known play by William Shakespeare.

The Titus Project is initiated by Prof. Jeffrey Sichel in association with University of Georgetown, USA, University of Cape Town, South Africa and International Association for Performing Arts and Research, Pune, India.

Titus Andronicus is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1588 and 1593. It is thought to be Shakespeare's first tragedy, and is often seen as his attempt to emulate the violent and bloody revenge plays of his contemporaries, which were extremely popular with audiences throughout the sixteenth century.

The play is set during the latter days of the Roman Empire and tells the fictional story of Titus, a general in the Roman army, who is engaged in a cycle of revenge with Tamora, Queen of the Goths. It is Shakespeare's bloodiest and most violent work and traditionally was one of his least respected plays. Although it was extremely popular in its day, it fell out of favour during the Victorian era, primarily because of what was considered to be a distasteful use of graphic violence, but from around the middle of the twentieth century its reputation began to improve.

In the modern world, Titus becomes very much contextual. The kind of violence that we see around and the nature of violence we experience is becoming more and more harsh. The violence is depicted in all the images we see around, be it on television, be it on hoardings, newspapers, films… everywhere. Even the cartoons! We also experience a subtle violence even in our daily routines. This manifests itself in child sexual abuse, increased rape cases, pressures of corporate world, politics of relationships, degeneration of ideologies… The list has become endless…

Performing Titus Andronicus today becomes important because of this social context that we live with.

Bringing the performers from India, South Africa and USA creates an opportunity for the artists to interact with each other, have fruitful conversations and look at our own realities in global context as well. This project initiates a dialogue amongst the young artists from across the globe investigating the ideas of violence, non-violence and peace.

Freedom Bus: The Playback Theatre

About Playback Theatre

Used in over 60 countries as a tool for community building, trauma response and cultural activism, Playback Theatre is a powerful response to the fundamental human need to share one's story.

IAPAR, in association with Midas, hosted a 3-day intensive, interactive introduction to Playback Theatre. Performing artists, educators, community workers and cultural activists were part of this project. The workshop was led by Ben Rivers, a British-Australian writer, educator and drama therapist who has 14 years of experience working with those impacted by oppression, violence and trauma. He currently works at The Freedom Theatre in Jenin Refugee Camp, Palestine where he founded the Freedom Bus initiative - a Playback Theatre project engaging thousands of Palestinians and people from abroad in cultural actions that promote civil rights and equality.

In India, Ben visited Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Heggodu and Mumbai delivering illuminating talks and conducting Playback Theatre workshops.

Ben Rivers delivered an open lecture on Playback Theatre. This was an introduction to the ideology and philosophy of Playback Theatre. The lecture was delivered on 1st March and the workshop was conducted from 3rd to 5th March 2014.

THE WORKSHOP

In this workshop, participants were guided to develop their ability to identify the central events, meanings and emotions that a 'teller' presents in their story. They learn to identify the important historical, social and political forces that are mentioned or implied. They also develop ways to translate these 'narrative cornerstones' into enactments that are rich in artistry and effective ensemble work. In addition, the focus is on voice development, movement practice and improvisational skills. The philosophy and application of Playback Theatre for community building, cultural activism and trauma response were also be explored.

This workshop was accredited through The Freedom Theatre's School of Playback Theatre - an affiliate school of the New York-based Centre for Playback Theatre. Workshop hours can be counted towards an internationally recognized Diploma in Playback Theatre.
